February is “Heart Month” for a number of reasons.  The clichés of the month of love, Valentines etc. is prevalent if you visit your local pharmacies or “’Marts ( K or Wal)”.  There it is a ploy to separate you from your dollar.  More about their LOVE of money than any other kind of love I think.  Oh so cynical you say?  I tend to believe Heart month should be more about what is inside all of us.  Use it or lose it!  Take care of it, or it will break or stop ticking.  So, in reality every month should be “heart month”.  Get your check ups and appreciate those around you, all good for the heart AND soul!

Now, down to business:  February is also responsible pet owner’s month.  To assist you in being responsible, our Treasurer, John Gilpin will be at Blooming Grove and Lackawaxen to provide dog licenses to you.  Seniors get a discount!

February is also Black History month and the birth month of Langston Hughes to name a few.  If you got a Kindle for Christmas, or you are a hold out like me who likes to hold the book not read it off a screen, check out his poetry at the Pike County Library.

The winter Olympics kick off in a few short weeks and Vancouver is the place to be.  After visiting Lake Placid a number of years ago, I have a new appreciation for the whole event. So many events and people, athletes, international food, it is quite an affair.  That brings me to my next “quest”.  I want to get a number of participants for the senior Olympics this year.  Do you play tennis?, Bocce?, Bowling?  We can put teams together for the competition  this spring/summer.  I will have more information as we get it.  The Nationals are held in Houston, Texas next year!

I also wanted to start a series that may be of interest to you if you have your own well.  I have been sitting on our own Wellhead protection committee here at the complex.  There is much to know about our drinking water and where our “puddles” and drain water end up.  Look for a number of pieces on this, it is never too late to try and protect the environment.  We hope to have some representatives from our own Conservation office come out and do a series on it as well.

As we look for the new budget year, I know I don’t believe it either since we just got this year’s budget passed, but April starts our next year’s budgetary process.  It is looking less than bright, so here is the mantra.
